I was asked by my employer to attend one of the YoungLives meetings and to see what resources I could find to assist them. I
was amazed at how organized the program was and how the teen moms
seemingly rely on this group as their “Family” -- far more than just
folks running in and out of their rich communities to mentor them. These young ladies do not get support or life skills in their day to day home life. YoungLives not only gives them a place to come to be educated about mom and parenting issues, but this group exposes them to camps and activities
that they knew nothing about. The girls were telling me about the
camp and telling me they loved it. “We can’t wait until next time!”
I listened and watched as women from the most lost areas of Philadelphia gained both knowledge and hope from
this organization. I watched as they answered questions regarding
breast feeding, handed out diapers and played games that involved
learning. I assisted with serving that nights’ dinner to the girls,
their kids and the volunteers. Everyone pitched in with whatever was needed. Most of all I noticed the young women’s interest level ---this group gives empowers their faith.
I
saw a one of a kind organization that does so much with so little --
the girls and their children look forward to the meetings, they talk
about the camp experiences, the games, etc. and they are quick to tell
you stories of their trips and stories about their children. To work
with this group for a night was both an honor and a privilege.
